Bernd Flessner
Erlangen, D

Dr. Bernd Flessner was born 1957 in Göttingen and grew up in Greetsiel, East Frisia. Studies: theatre and media studies, German studies and history at the FAU of Erlangen. In his Magister degree thesis, »Die kybernetische Illusion« (»The Cybernetic Illusion«, 1987), he anticipated the possibility to animate movies of any kind entirely using a computer. He obtained a doctoral degree under the supervision of Theo Elm. In his dissertation, he wrote about the technical prognoses of Arno Schmidt and Stanislaw Lem, entitled: »Weltprothesen und Prothesenwelten« (»World Protheses and Worlds of Protheses«). His work led to an invitation to Alexander Kluge’s studio in 2015 (a 45-minutes interview for dctp). Stanislaw Lem contacted him as well, which led to a co-operation resulting in the joint publication »Die Entdeckung der Virtualität« (»The Discovery of Virtuality«, Suhrkamp 1996). Several co-operations or joint publications with other authors ensued, including Umberto Eco, Carl Amery, Rainer Erler, and Herbert W. Franke.

After he had obtained the doctoral degree, Flessner worked for numerous firms and institutes in the area of future studies; including companies such as DHL, Telekom, VDE, Deutsches Museum München, Adolf-Grimme-Institut, Z_Punkt, GfK or Imbus, but also together with university research institutes and Federal Ministries. He contributed to several scenario studies and numerous presentations on different questions regarding the future.

Flessner is currently working at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg’s Zentralinstitut für Angewandte Ethik und Wissenschaftskommunikation (ZIEW; »central institute for applied ethics and scientific communication«) as a researcher in the area of future studies.

As a science journalist and essayist, he is writing for inter alia: Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Kultur & Technik, Theater heute, Ästhetik & Kommunikation, Wechselwirkung, mare – Zeitschrift der Meere, Kursbuch, Tageszeitung, SQ-Magazin, Zukünfte, Archiv – Magazin für Kommunikationsgeschichte, Nürnberger Nachrichten, BR, WDR, ZDF.

His works were printed inter alia at the publishing houses Rowohlt, Suhrkamp, C.H. Beck, Franckh-Kosmos, Random House.

Staff member and designer of various exhibition projects and events, such as for the Museum für Kommunikation (Nuremberg), ZEITReise 2000 (Berlin, Wien).

Collaborator and author of different media and theatre projects, such as in Bamberg (E.T.A. Hoffmann-Theater) and Munich (Münchner Kammerspiele). Co-operation with August Everding, Maximilian Schell, and Helmut Dietl among others.

Flessner particularly emphasizes the communication of scientific work and findings to children. This led to the publication of around 30 children’s and adolescents’ books at various publishing houses to date, including Tessloff (WAS IST WAS), a co-operation with the WDR (Sendung mit der Maus), the participation in children’s universities or the organization of events for children (e.g. Deutsches Museum München).

The Deutsches Museum is planning to install a branch in Nuremberg with a focus on future and science fiction. Flessner has been appointed to the advisory board of this new museum. His university president, Mr. Hornegger, has nominated him for the Communicator Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).
